You have already been\nfaced with the problem of a field name that does not satisfy\nyou . But as soon\nas data has been entered in the table it is no longer possible to modify the characteristics\nof a field. The solution used is to create a new field with the desired characteristics, copy with the field calculator the contents of the old one\nand then delete the old field from the table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not very elegant\nor practical, several\nsolutions have been introduced in the latest\nversions of ArcGis. The problem it is now to choose when changing the version. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, let\u2019s discuss how to proceed according to\nthe version you are using. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We will discuss\nhow to modify the\ncharacteristics of a field in a geodatabase file; the other\nformats are not designed to evolve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up to version 10.1, we will remain using the method\ncreation of a new field, calculation of values ,\ndeletion of the old field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Version 10.2<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new feature of\nversion 10.2 is the ability to change the name of a field in a geodatabase file and,\nsimilarly, even if no records have been, yet, created, to change the type of the field. \n\nTherefore,\njust open the entities class properties window, by going to\nthe tab \u00ab<\/em>\u201cChamps<\/em>\u201d\nand type\nthe new name of the desired field. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
