The reference website for coordinate systems\nused\nduring World War II is Thierry Arsicaud’s website\n: Notes on the \u00ab\u00a0Modified\nBritish System\u00a0\u00bb used on the European Theatre of Operations during the\nWWII.<\/a>
\nIn\n1919, Great Britain adopted in its territory the \u00ab\u00a0British System\u00a0\u00bb,\nbased on a Cassini-type map projection<\/a> and the use of a\ngrid designed to facilitate the reading of the coordinates of the designated\npoints . This system was replaced\nin\n1927 by the \u201c British Modified System\u00a0\u00bb, more\nsuited to cover large geographical areas and military operational use by\nland or airlift\nforces.
\nThis\n\u201cBritish Modified\u201d system was used during the second world war\nby the British and American armies by being\nextended\nto European, North African, the Near East and South East Asian operation\ntheatres.\n\nThe following figure , from\nThierry Arsicaud’s website shows\nthe areas corresponding to the projections in course\nduring\nWorld War II. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
