Yes but &#8230; If you do not know how\nto pre-format your table, you open a Pandora\u2019s box! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, in detail, all you need to know to work in peace and quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>We will discuss the constraints concerned with: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the columns of the table <\/li><li>the rows of the table <\/li><li>the table cells <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Constraints on Excel table columns<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1- All columns must have values<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the history of your Excel spreadsheet, you may end up with\nempty columns to the right of your table. While this has no consequence in\nExcel, ArcGis will generate as many attribute fields as empty columns exist. Therefore\nyou can end up with dozens, hundreds of useless fields. \n\nHow to face the problem? Simple, position the\ncolumn cursor (bottom right) at the limit of your working area. If the\nhorizontal elevator is not at the end of the cursor, you have empty columns\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" columns are converted to generic Fxx fields and filled with null\nvalues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solutions:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Before<\/em><\/strong> loading the table in ArcMap: delete the empty\ncolumns. <strong><em>After<\/em><\/strong> loading the table in ArcMap: right-click on the\ncolumn heading of the table (for each column) and select the option not to\ndisplay this must contain the names of the\nattribute fields<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, you already know this, but it&rsquo;s still worth remembering. If the\nfirst line does not contain the names of the fields, either you end up with\ngeneric Fxx fields (at best), or with an empty table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before opening an Excel table with ArcMap, be sure to name the fields on\nthe first line of the table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3-The first character of the name of a field must\nbe a letter<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALSE!<\/strong> \n\nThis was the case in the past, but if you have\nversion 10.3 like me, this is no longer valid. It&rsquo;s supposed not to pass the join validation. In\nversion 10.3.1, which I use, works without problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So? For extra security, avoid special characters in names, but if they\nare already there, do not waste your time editing them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4-Do not exceed a certain length in the field names\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum lengths depend on the format of the resulting table. If you\nexceed the allowed length, the field name will be truncated to this length. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allowed lengths are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>64 characters for file\ngeodatabases <\/li><li>31 characters for SQL Server and\nSQL Server Express <\/li><li>30 characters for Oracle and DB2 <\/li><li>10 characters for Dbase\n(shapefiles) <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5-Avoid duplicating names<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a blocking factor. The second identical name will be\nassigned a 1 at the end, the third a 2, and so on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6- Avoid the ArcMap reserved names <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have names like OID in your Excel spreadsheet, it will be\nassigned a _ at the end. But in some cases, the table cannot be displayed. So,\navoid the following words in your Excel field names: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ObjectID <\/li><li>OID <\/li><li>IDF <\/li><li>Shape_Length <\/li><li>Shape_Area <\/li><li>ADD <\/li><li>ALTER <\/li><li>AND <\/li><li>BETWEEN <\/li><li>BY <\/li><li>COLUMN <\/li><li>CREATE <\/li><li>DELETE <\/li><li>DROP <\/li><li>EXISTS <\/li><li>FOR <\/li><li>FROM <\/li><li>GROUP <\/li><li>IN <\/li><li>INSERT <\/li><li>INTO <\/li><li>IS <\/li><li>LIKE <\/li><li>NOT <\/li><li>NULL <\/li><li>GOLD <\/li><li>ORDER <\/li><li>SELECT <\/li><li>SET <\/li><li>TABLE <\/li><li>UPDATE <\/li><li>VALUES <\/li><li>WHERE <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7- Assign basic data types to your Excel cells<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Excel you have a whole series of possible types for your data. In\nArcGis you will only have Text, Number, and Date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the column base types specified in Excel that are used to\ndefine the field type in ArcGIS. When the column type is not specified (that\nis, Standard) the field type in ArcGIS is determined by an analysis of the\nvalues \u200b\u200bin the first eight rows of that column. If the Excel line does not contain values, you will have a record filled\nwith Null values. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not forcibly a blocking factor, but it can quickly become\nannoying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete empty lines before loading the table in ArcMap or in a\ngeodatabase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Excel table cells constraints<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1- The cells must not contain formulas<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cells containing formulas are ignored by ArcGis and will not be in the\nresulting table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve this problem: copy and paste the column with the formula into a\nnew column, copy and paste special \/ values \u200b\u200bthis column on the original\ncolumn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2-The contents of a cell must not exceed 255\ncharacters<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the documentation, if a cell has more than 255 characters,\nthe field is converted to BLOB and its contents are not displayed. Maybe if you\nimport the Excel table into a personal Geodatabase (Access) this is true. But\nas far as the display in ArcMap is concerned, you will not be able to load the\narray (it will appear completely empty) in the ArcMap layers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you use the <strong><em>Excel to Table<\/em><\/strong> tool to a file\ngeodatabase, you are not limited in the length of the text. Even texts longer\nthan 255 characters will be loaded and available (visible) in the table of the\ngeodatabase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3-Numeric cells must not contain text<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your Excel table you should not use texts such as NoData, NA, Null or\neven spaces, to indicate the absence of data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do, the field will be converted to a Text field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete all the cells containing your texts. The field will be numeric in\nArcGis and the cells will be &lt;Null&gt;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4-Avoid spaces before and after character strings<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this aspect may not be blocking in most cases, if you are going to\nuse a Text field to create labels or annotations or to create joins between\ntables, remove the spaces before and after the string by using the Excel&rsquo;s\nDELETE function, before loading the table into ArcGis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5- The cells must not have been merged.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If two cells are merged into Excel, the contents of the first cell\ndisappear and the second cell is replaced by the value &lt;Null&gt;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went through everything you need to know to load Excel tables in\nArcMap. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ArcGis reads straight through the Excel tables.
