Even  if\nit\ncan\nlook\nweird (use a GIS tool not to update a GIS\nbase) there are occasions when it proves\nvery\nuseful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A GIS base comprises two types of information : spatial information ( geometry ) and attributes information . For many field projects there is untrained GIS staff responsible for maintaining the information , especially attributes , of a GIS database. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It is easier to provide them\nwith a tool such as LibreOffice rather\nthan training them in GIS. In this\narticle we will discuss the  remote\nupdate of a database Postgresql \/ Postgis<\/a>. It is obvious\nthat the updates will only concern the data attributes\n, the creation of geometries remaining reserved\nfor the use of a GIS client. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will use as Postgres client, LibreOffice Base, the\nequivalent of Microsoft Access. LibreOffice Base allows the\ncreation of forms , used as updated interface with a\ndatabase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will find abundant\ndocumentation and tutorials on how to use forms\nwith LibreOffice. By cons it\nis\nnot easy to find how to connect to a Postgresql database with LibreOffice.\nIt\nis this point what we will discuss here .\n\n\nYou must start with LibreOffice\nBase   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time you want to connect to your\npostgresql database, choose Connect<\/em><\/strong> a<\/em><\/strong>\ndatabase<\/em><\/strong> existing<\/em><\/strong>\nand\nselect\nPostgreSQL. Next time you\ncan use the option Open<\/em><\/strong> a<\/em><\/strong>\nDatabase<\/em><\/strong> file<\/em><\/strong> existing<\/em><\/strong>\n.<\/em><\/strong> \n\nThe Connection settings\nwindow is displayed . \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is here that, usually, you find\nthe first problem since there is no clear documentation on the structure of the\nURL to enter . Moreover, this is\nnot a URL it’s actually a chain Connection:\n
\ndbname<\/em><\/strong> = name of<\/em><\/strong> your<\/em><\/strong>\ndatabase<\/em><\/strong> hostaddr<\/em><\/strong> =<\/em><\/strong> IP<\/em><\/strong> address<\/em><\/strong>\nof the base port = 5432 user =<\/em><\/strong> postgres<\/em><\/strong> password\n=<\/em><\/strong> password<\/em><\/strong> postgres<\/em><\/strong>\ndbname<\/em><\/strong> must correspond\nexactly\nthe name of your database appears in the window pgAdminIII\n  \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hostadrr<\/em><\/strong> is the IP address of the\nserver Postresql . If you\nare\nin\nlocal, localhost corresponds, in general, to the address\n127.0.0.1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbor<\/em><\/strong> is the Postgresql listening\nport . It appears next to the server name. If you\nkeep\nthe default configuration it is\n5432. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The user<\/em><\/strong> and password<\/em><\/strong>\nhave\nto match a user defined in\nthe Postgresql database. If you want\nto sign in administrator, it is\npostgres\nand\nthe password that you have defined\nwhen\ninstalling Postgresql. \n\nThe user setting window appears : \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoy to test the connection and check,\nas\nwell as, the connection string entered in the window former\nworks\ncorrectly\n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Save the connection file , as well you\ncan\nyou\nsave\nall\nthese\noperations\nin future connections: you will\nselect in the first window Opening<\/em><\/strong>\na<\/em><\/strong> database<\/em><\/strong> file<\/em><\/strong> existing<\/em><\/strong>\nand you point to this file . \n\nYou are now connected\nto the Postgres database. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can navigate\nin\ndifferent diagrams , tables and views\nof your base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the left window you have the Query and\nForms\nbuttons that you will let you create them.\n\n\nJust an advice\nto finish . When you\ncreate\na\nform\n, the first window allows you  to choose the fields to integrate\nin\nthe form .  \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
