Since delivery of the 10.3 version, there are some\nnew ArcMap tools available that deserve to be\nbetter known . Here is a\nseries\nof articles regarding their description.\n\n\nFirstly, we will discuss the \u00ab\u00a0Points to\nline\u00a0\u00bb tool,  You,\nprobably,\n know the procedure for integrating\na\ntable of points, in text format or Excel, as a layer of\npoints in Arcmap . If this is\nnot the case , it will be described a little further in\nthis article. What is less\nknown\nis\nthat you can as well incorporate\ntables containing rows as series of points, such as GPS routes. Let’s\nsee for example a bathymetry\nlayer.   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe\nfile containing\nthis\ninformation is an Excel table such as :  \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only difference with a classic\nscoreboard it is the\nexistence of a field ( here Ident) that allows us to\nidentify the different lines . Therefore\n, if it does not exist , our procedure will\ncreate\na\nsingle\nline from the first point up until the last one of the table.\nBy\ncons if we have a field with the information\nbelonging\nto a specific line, the procedure will create\nan\nindependent\nline for each value of this field.\nIn\nthe\nabove example, a line will be created by\nusing\nthe coordinates of lines 2 to 19 (Ident = 0), then a\nsecond\nline\nby\nusing the coordinates 20 to 24 (Ident = 1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s discuss how to do it.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first place we have to load the table into Arcmap as a point table following the classical procedure: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click the Arcmap add data buttom, browse the files to point your Excel\nfile, double-click to open the sheets and select the one containing the data . \n\nNote : you can use this same procedure by using a\nfile text csv<\/a>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the context menu of the new layer , select Display<\/em><\/strong>XY<\/em><\/strong>data<\/em><\/strong>..<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn\nthe settings window, specify which fields include the X and Y coordinates, and\nthe coordinate system used .  \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou\nwill get a warning message indicating that the layer does not include an\ninternal identifier . Click OK\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe\nevent layer in the form of points is displayed . \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s go back to the warning message . Perhaps ESRI will think to solve this\nproblem . But for the time being , the layer created can be displayed but cannot\nserve as input of almost no treatment . You will get an error message indicating\nthat the treatment cannot be performed because of the lack identifier . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, we have to save our XY events layer as a shapefile<\/a> or a geodatabase\ntable: \n\nRight click on the XY Events Layer> Data<\/em><\/strong>-> Export Data<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resulting layer including the\ninternal identifiers, is displayed . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s on this layer where we will use the Points<\/em><\/strong> to<\/em><\/strong>\nlines<\/em><\/strong> tool of the Toolbox. \n\nGo to Toolbox -><\/em><\/strong>Data<\/em><\/strong>Management<\/em><\/strong>-><\/em><\/strong>Game<\/em><\/strong>tools<\/em><\/strong>Entities<\/em><\/strong>-> Points<\/em><\/strong>to<\/em><\/strong>lines<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Select the input layer and name the output layer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have three optional parameters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If none is filled in , the tool will create a single line , starting\nwith the first record till the last recording . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you set a line field<\/em><\/strong> field, the tool will create an independent\n line for each value different from this\nfield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you set a field sort field<\/em><\/strong> , the table will be first sorted\nin function of the values of this field, before building the lines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The option Close Line<\/em><\/strong> , will create automatically a\nsegment between the first point   and the last point of a line . You can, then,\n use the entities<\/em><\/strong> towards<\/em><\/strong>\npolygons<\/em><\/strong> tool and create surfaces from your layer of lines . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three options can be used jointly or not . In all cases, the order of\nexecution is : <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • sorting records following the Sort field<\/em><\/strong> , if is informed ; <\/li>
  • creating lines by cutting the Line\nfield field, if is informed ; <\/li>
  • the closure of each line by creating the last point segment – first point <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
