In a previous article we discussed how to create a layer lines from a\nfile text or Excel with Arcmap . Now is the turn with QGis.There are only two differences\n: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the first is that it is not necessary to load the Excel table, and then save it in as a layer (shapefile<\/a>) <\/li>
the second is that there is no option to close automatically the lines by linking\nthe last point to the first point of each line . <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nThe file containing this information is an Excel\ntable such as :   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the creation of a layer of dots we have to count with an X and\na Y field that will create the corresponding point. In order to get an entities line, we need a third essential\nfield that includes an identifying line: all points of a line will have the\nsame value for this field. A fourth field is necessary to indicate the order of\nthe points. but we will discuss how to create this field when using the\nprocessing tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let’s see the procedure in detail . <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To create a layer from a virtual a Excel sheet , you need the Spreadsheet\nLayers<\/em><\/strong> plugin .<\/em><\/strong> \n\nGo to the Extensions<\/em><\/strong> menu ->\nInstall \/<\/em><\/strong>manage<\/em><\/strong>extensions<\/em><\/strong> and double-\nclick on the \u00a0\u00bb Spreadsheet layers<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0\u00bb extension .\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn\nthe left vertical toolbar you will notice\na new tool   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick\non this tool .   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Browse button … point to your Excel file , and , if necessary\n, with the drop-down menu select the sheet including your data . <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Name the layer . <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Check the box Geometry and enter the corresponding field names for X and\nY. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Select the SRC<\/a> (reference system) for your data ( eg EPSG : 4236 if it’s\nlatitudes \/ longitudes). \n\nClick OK. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The points layer is displayed in QGis. \n\nIn the panel Treatments<\/em><\/strong> , go in Geoprocessing<\/em><\/strong>QGis -><\/em><\/strong>creation<\/em><\/strong>of<\/em><\/strong>vectors<\/em><\/strong>Tools<\/em><\/strong>-> points<\/em><\/strong>to<\/em><\/strong>lines<\/em><\/strong>\n. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before launching the tool , check that it, indeed, exist an Id field that gives the order for the\nrecordings . If this is not the case : <\/p>\n\n\n\n
select the layer you have just loaded <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n\nclick on the \u00a0\u00bb Field Calculator \u00a0\u00bb tool , this opens the corresponding table \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave the check box Create<\/em><\/strong> new field<\/em><\/strong> checked <\/li>
Name the field, for example Sorting<\/em><\/strong> or Order<\/em><\/strong> <\/li>
To double-click the expression row_number<\/strong> or on Recordings<\/em><\/strong> -> $ id<\/em><\/strong> <\/li>
Click OK.<\/strong> You will get a field available for the tool Points<\/em><\/strong> to<\/em><\/strong> lines<\/em><\/strong> .<\/em><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDouble-click the processing tool to run. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fill in the<\/em><\/strong> Input<\/em><\/strong> Layer<\/em><\/strong> fields\nand grouping<\/em><\/strong> field<\/em><\/strong> and sort field.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you want to create a file on the disk , click on the …<\/strong>\nbutton of Paths<\/em><\/strong> and give the file a name at the exit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Click on RUN<\/em><\/strong> . \n\nThe final result is displayed in QGis.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
